Blaq Unicorn Financial is a diverse corporate finance team of Fortune 500 and Nonprofit professionals. We provide fractional financial services to mid-size minority- and LGBTQ+-led nonprofit organizations struggling with Financial Transparency, Budgeting and Performance Tracking, Strategic Planning, and Risk Management. Tyrone Smith
Co-Founder
I’m a Finance Professional and Data Scientist with 12+ years of experience working at the intersection of Accounting Operations, FP&A, and Data. My past experience includes helping grow internal financial capacity for small family-owned businesses, mid-sized private equity-backed start-ups, and large Fortune 500 companies. As a native New Yorker, I spent my formative years in the bankruptcy industry. My exposure to organizations in crisis underscored the importance of financial transparency, strong operational controls, and financial leadership. These values remain the cornerstone of my work today.
My passion for nonprofit organizations runs deep. As one of four children to a single mother, I attribute much of my success to the success of my local nonprofit organizations. From the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, to the New York City Fresh-Air-Fund, these organizations provided me with opportunities to learn and grow beyond what my family could organically provide. I know first-hand nonprofit organizations are often literal life-lines for the communities they serve and I'm passionate about supporting them.

I’m a strategic finance and FP&A professional with 12+ years of experience helping organizations make better decisions through thoughtful financial planning, analysis, and business partnership.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked across technology, financial services, e-commerce, fintech, and travel, partnering with leaders to navigate budgets, forecasts, investments, and complex business decisions. My experience spans FP&A, scenario planning, resource allocation, performance measurement, and translating financial data into practical insights.
I’m passionate about bringing that experience to nonprofits and mission-driven organizations. I believe strong financial planning isn’t just about managing budgets or reporting numbers—it’s about helping organizations make the most of every dollar so they can better serve their communities and advance their mission.
My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded in purpose. Whether I’m helping build a sustainable budget, understand program costs, or make difficult resource decisions, my goal is to give nonprofit leaders greater financial clarity and confidence.
For me, finance is ultimately a tool for impact—helping good organizations make thoughtful decisions, strengthen their sustainability, and do more good.
Deepali Soundararajan, CPA
Co-Founder
I bring a controller’s eye for detail to the unique financial needs of mission-driven organizations. With a background in accounting and financial operations, I joined Blaqunicorn Financial to help nonprofits gain the financial clarity and support typically associated with a full-time CFO — without the full-time cost.
I believe nonprofit finance is about more than keeping clean books. It’s about telling the story behind the numbers so boards, funders, and grant reviewers can understand and trust what they’re seeing. From month-end close and reconciliations to financial reporting and audit preparation, I partner with executive directors and boards to build financial systems that are accurate, transparent, and easy to rely on.
Having worked closely with mid-sized to large nonprofits, I understand the pressure of doing more with less. I’m also continuing to expand the strategic side of my work, including budgeting, forecasting, and forward-looking financial planning, so I can help organizations not only understand where they’ve been, but make more informed decisions about where they’re going.
Outside of work, I’m an avid Carnatic music enthusiast. I love attending concerts, learning vocal music, and arranging workshops that help introduce this rich musical tradition to new audiences.
